About the author

Dr Scarlett Brown leads the Think Tank at Board Intelligence and is passionate about helping leaders and boards achieve better, evidence-based practices so that every business can be a force for good in society.

Scarlett specialises in topics such as business in society, environmental, social, and governance (ESG), diversity, leadership, board effectiveness, and corporate governance. She frequently contributes as a speaker, panellist, and commentator on these topics. Notably, she has made appearances on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 2, and in 2023, she was recognised by HR Magazine as one of HR's Most Influential Thinkers.

A former corporate governance and responsible business consultant, Scarlett was previously Director of Research at think tank Tomorrow's Company. She has also led her own research consultancy, Research with Purpose, and co-founded non-executive director search site Dynamic Boards. She has successfully conducted and authored major research insights in collaboration with prominent organisations, such as the CIPD, Grant Thornton Governance Institute, University of Oxford, Company Matters, and HR Magazine.

In 2022, Scarlett published her book Gender and Corporate Boards: The Route to a Seat at the Table, which is based on her PhD research on the obstacles to achieving boardroom diversity. In addition to her PhD, Scarlett has a BSc in Sociology from Bristol University and an MSc in Sociology from King's College London.
