For Governance Professionals
Best Practice Board Packs: 5th June
Join our breakfast roundtable to learn what good looks like and how to get there. We’ll unpack the contents of a best practice board pack, discuss the traits of a great board paper, and you’ll come away with a 3-step guide to improving your board pack and streamlining the creation process.
The Governance Grand Tour: 6th June (Birmingham) & 19th June (Cambridge)
Board Intelligence’s Governance Grand Tour is back! If you attended the Tour in 2018, you’ll know that there has never been a more important and influential time to be a governance professional. With intense spotlight on the way our organisations are governed, increasing workloads, and ever-changing requirements, just delivering BAU can be a daunting task.
That’s why we have updated the Governance Grand Tour with an even punchier format for Company Secretaries and governance professionals. Join our unique (and free) sessions in your local city to learn how — in just a few hours — you can achieve a step change in the effectiveness of your governance.
Are you a board member? Then have a look below at our Intelligent Board programme.
Company Secretary Strategic Adviser Series: In Conversation with Aileen Taylor, RBS: 10th June
In recent years, the responsibilities of company secretaries have expanded significantly to encompass being a strategic adviser, supporting board decision making and embedding corporate governance. This opportunity comes with increased expectations, new skills, and more demands on CoSecs – often with no extra time or resource to effect change. Against this backdrop, we explore how some of the UK’s most high profile company secretaries have redefined themselves and their teams. We’ll discuss what worked and share approaches you can implement in your company.
In part 1, we’ll be joined by Aileen Taylor, Chief Governance & Regulatory Officer and Board Counsel at Royal Bank of Scotland. We’ll explore how Aileen has rebranded and transformed the CoSec function at RBS into a trusted, valued advisor to the board and executive.
If you’d like to join us at the discussion over drinks and nibbles, please contact us to request an invitation.
Effective Report Writing: 11th June & 19th June
Join our breakfast to learn how to prepare board papers that are half the size with twice the impact. We’ll share our methodology to write high-quality papers, and tools you can use to support and upskill your report authors — ensuring they are equipped to write papers that enable board members to discharge their duties.
Company Secretary Think Tank Breakfast: 18th June
Following our successful Chairman Think Tank breakfasts on employee voice and decision making — as well as our upcoming breakfast on board information — we are giving Company Secretaries the opportunities to have their say.
We will be focusing on the above themes in our inaugural breakfasts, with the first discussion on employee voice.
If you’d like to join us and contribute to the debate, please contact us to request an invitation.
Automating Your Board Packs: 26th June
Join our breakfast roundtable to learn how you can save time, money and improve your information security by automating your board reporting process from agenda planning to paper publishing.
Beyond distributing board papers digitally, we’ll focus on how technology can be used end-to-end throughout your board reporting cycle, freeing up Company Secretary teams to focus on being a trusted adviser to the board, rather than spending time on board administration.
For Board Members
The Intelligent Board: 13th June (Manchester) & 27th June (Birmingham)
Board members have the power to improve their boards, find new ways to enhance the governance of their organisations, and rebuild trust with society. So how do we do this without making governance just a ‘box ticking’ exercise?
In our new Intelligent Board programme you’ll discuss research on boardroom trends, hear case studies about what went wrong in the boardrooms of scandal-hit organisations, and see what leading boards are doing to stay on the front foot. Similar to our Governance Grand Tour, this half day (free) session — in your local city — will give you the opportunity to discuss questions such as ‘is your board focused on the right things?’ to ‘are your board materials good enough?’.
Chairman Think Tank Breakfast: 20th June
In 2015 we formed a Think Tank to foster ideas that improve the way our boards do business. We engaged over 700 board members, reported findings in a weekly FT column and exhibited our visual minutes from each session at the Royal Academy of Arts. In 2019 our Think Tank is back, and we’re exploring the themes of decision making, board information, and employee voice.
Our next Think Tank breakfast will focus on employee voice, around the topic “The government asked boardrooms to change, to better understand and represent employee voice — have we done enough? Are the changes making a difference to the board conversation and the information the board receives?”
If you’d like to join us and contribute to the debate, please contact us to request an invitation.
For Private Equity Professionals
The Board’s Role & Value in PE-Backed Businesses: 25th June
Board meetings are a key tool for value creation — making the board pack an important focus for PE houses and their portfolio companies. Yet, few boards manage to make it value-enhancing.
To understand what’s going wrong, and why, we engaged with over 100 investment professionals, portfolio company executives, and experienced non-executives. Our research revealed a worrying disconnect between what is expected from board meetings and what they actually achieve, as well as widespread concerns about the quality of board reporting.
Join our breakfast roundtable in London to discuss these findings, and learn what leading portfolio company boards are doing to deliver value-enhancing board meetings.
